Helping young people realize their full potential
Every child deserves the chance to thrive—at home, in school, and in life. But in Sumner County, too many young people face barriers that limit their potential from the start. From gaps in early learning and affordable child care to limited access to enrichment and career opportunities, these challenges can have a lasting impact.
At United Way of Sumner County, we’re creating pathways for young people to succeed from cradle to career. By supporting families, partnering with educators, and investing in key transition points—like kindergarten readiness and post-secondary planning—we’re helping today’s youth become tomorrow’s leaders.
Our Youth Opportunity Initiatives
United Way supports a network of initiatives and programs that empower young people to learn, grow, and lead:
- Childcare and Early Childhood Education
The first years of life shape a child’s future. We help expand access to quality early education and prepare children for school success by supporting caregivers, educators, and families. - In-School, After-School, and Summer Learning
Learning doesn’t stop when the school day ends. We invest in enriching out-of-school experiences that help young people develop confidence, skills, and positive relationships. - Family Engagement
Strong families build strong futures. We foster collaboration between families, schools, and local partners so every child has a support system for success. - Literacy Development
Early and ongoing literacy skills open the door to opportunity. We expand access to literacy resources that can spark curiosity and fuel learning for every child. - College and Career Readiness
From mentorships to job training and life skills, we connect youth with opportunities to explore their strengths, build confidence, and plan for the future.
Why This Matters in Sumner County

- While 97.6% of youth graduate high school on time, only 48.1% are reading at or above grade level and 58.0% are proficient in math, suggesting large opportunity gaps.
- 13% of students are chronically absent, and 7.2 per 1,000 children are confirmed victims of abuse or neglect—indicating how stress and hardship can derail learning and development.
