United Way of Sumner County agency, Nurses for Newborns, provides prevention services to medically fragile infants, caregivers with medical, mental health, or substance use concerns, and teenage parents needing support. Diane* and her baby were recently under the care of Nurses for Newborns.

As the mother of a child with Down's Syndrome, Diane had carried the weight of uncertainty and self-blame along with the responsibilities of caring for herself during her postpartum recovery and caring for a medically fragile infant. Nurses for Newborns nurse, Deirdre, began to see Diane regularly to provide care, support, and guidance. Through conversations and educational sessions, Deirdre assured Diane that her child's condition was not her fault and was able to dispel any myths and stories Diane had heard regarding Downs Syndrome. With each visit, Diane’s confidence as a parent grew, and the fear of her child never living a normal life gradually faded away. Deirdre not only provided emotional reassurance but also empowered Diane with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate her child's specific medical needs and access the myriad of resources available for support.
