United Way Agency, Gallatin Shalom Zone, offers a free ESL program that provides free childcare to participants while they take classes.
Isabella*, a single mother with a special needs child, came into Gallatin Shalom Zone and began the ESL program with very little knowledge of the English language. She started in their Basic class, and progressed to the Intermediate level. Through conversations with her, Gallatin Shalom Zone staff determined that there were several barriers impacting her financial stability. They immediately referred her to United Way's 2-1-1 resource, assisted her with fulfilling basic needs through their Hygiene Pantry, referred her to Goodwill Career Solutions for job services, referred her to Mid-Cumberland Community Action Agency for assistance with food and utilities, and referred her to Feed Sumner Food Bank and Ministry for assistance with urgent food insecurity. Using their Community Computer Lab, the staff also assisted her with communicating with her child's school to schedule an IEP appointment.
Because of her ESL progress, commitment, and achievement, she is now volunteering as a translator at Gallatin Shalom Zone for special events like Toys for Tots. We are all so proud of, and grateful for, Isabella, and honored to be a part of her journey!
