3 kids brushing teeth

At United Way of Sumner County (UWSC), we often witness stories that reveal the quiet yet profound struggles of our neighbors.

Community Resource Center (CRC), one of UWSC's newest Funded Partner Agencies, recently shared a moment that underscores the importance of their work—and why we remain committed to supporting programs that address basic needs.  (CRC supplies local Sumner County hygiene pantries with a wide range of hygiene items to be distributed free of charge to individuals facing economic hardships, crises, and transitional periods.)

During a visit with a local family experiencing housing instability, one of CRC’s partners noticed how a lack of hygiene resources was compounding the family’s challenges. While connecting with the mother to discuss available support programs, the partner staff invited one of the younger children to choose a new toothbrush from a selection of hygiene items CRC had provided.

A few minutes later, the child returned holding a single toothbrush. The partner staff gently asked, “Don’t you want to pick one out for your brother and sister, too?”

The child hesitated before responding, “I didn’t know we were supposed to have our own toothbrush. We’ve been sharing just one.”

This simple, honest answer reflects the reality many families face.  For some, items we take for granted—like having a personal toothbrush—are a luxury out of reach.

This moment highlights why CRC is so deeply dedicated to breaking down barriers to hygiene. By providing essential resources like toothbrushes, soap, and other hygiene supplies, they’re not just promoting health—they’re restoring dignity. These efforts are a vital step in fostering a community where everyone has access to the essentials they need to thrive.

Stories like this remind us why "United is the Way" isn’t just a campaign slogan; it’s a reflection of what we can achieve together. By joining forces with organizations like CRC, we’re transforming lives and creating a stronger, healthier community. Addressing barriers to basic hygiene is more than providing resources—it’s about opening doors to dignity, confidence, and resilience for families across Sumner County.

United is the Way to a healthier community, where every individual has the resources they need to live with dignity and hope.
