What does it mean to advocate?
Simply put, it just means to speak out -- to champion a cause. It doesn't have to be a big cause or issue, just something that has meaning to you. It could be something that has affected you or someone you care about or it could be something that you have always valued.
It doesn't mean you to have to go to your state legislature or Capitol Hill or write letters or even speak out at public meetings -- although, those are all good ways to advocate.
But what if you're not a letter writer or comfortable speaking in public? What can you do?
Well, learn about the issues that affect your community. Just the fact that you're looking at our United Way website indicates you want to learn more. Read the newspapers. Watch the news on TV or online. Listen to what politicians and other community leaders have to say. Attend neighborhood meetings, just to listen. Form opinions and share your opinions with others. That's how you start to advocate and LIVE UNITED!
